Understand your word grades¶
How MemoLeap Spelling decides how long you get for each word, scores each answer, and turns those scores into the grades Very Good, Good, Developing, Weak and Unseen.
How long you get for each word¶
Every word gets one second per letter, plus some extra time. How much extra depends on how well you know the word: a word you struggle with gets up to 20 extra seconds, and the extra shrinks as your grade improves. On the free version the extra never drops below 5 seconds. With Premium it can shrink all the way to zero, so a word you know very well has to be typed at a brisk pace to keep its grade.
A word you've never been asked gets a middling amount of extra time.
The first two seconds after the word is spoken don't count. The bar across the top of the Learn screen stays full for those two seconds, then starts to shrink. When it's empty, the word is marked wrong.
Each answer is scored on speed and accuracy¶
When you finish a word, the app records how long you took, measured from the end of those two seconds. Finishing inside them counts as the fastest possible time.
Each attempt gets a score between 0 (best) and 100 (worst). The best score needs a time of about half a second per letter. A slower answer scores worse in proportion, up to 30 seconds, which is the worst score. A wrong answer, or running out of time, is always recorded as 30 seconds, however quickly you typed.
That 30-second figure is also why Avg. time on Results rises sharply after a couple of mistakes.
A word's grade leans towards your most recent attempts¶
A word's grade comes from an average of its last 20 attempts, but not an equal one: each attempt counts a little more than the one before it, so your most recent answers matter most. A word you used to struggle with climbs back to Good or Very Good fairly quickly once you start answering it well, and a word you'd mastered slips back down if you start getting it wrong.
The grade boundaries are: Very Good for a score of 10 or less, Good up to 30, Developing up to 70, and Weak above that. A word with no attempts is Unseen.
A brand-new word can't jump straight to the top¶
The first time you answer a word, its grade can't be better than Developing, however fast and correct you were. It takes at least one more good answer before it can reach Good or Very Good. This stops a single lucky guess from looking like mastery.
Editing a word keeps its grade¶
Changing the text of one of your own words keeps its attempts and grade. Removing the word, deleting its group, or resetting your progress clears them.
