Why a mistyped letter can still count as correct¶
MemoLeap Spelling is deliberately forgiving about slips of the finger on its on-screen keyboard, so a mistap doesn't count as a spelling mistake. Two separate rules are at work.
You get one wrong letter, as long as you delete it¶
When you tap a letter that doesn't fit the word, the app doesn't mark you wrong straight away. The letter appears in your answer, looking just like the others, and you get a chance to notice it. Tap ⌫ to remove it and carry on as if it never happened.
If instead you tap any other key while that wrong letter is still there, the word is marked wrong. So you're never punished for a single slip you correct, but you can't type through a mistake.
This applies at any point in the word, not just the start. Only one wrong letter can be waiting at a time.
A neighbouring key can be accepted as the right one¶
The keys on the spelling keyboard are small. If you tap a key that sits right next to the correct one, the app accepts it as if you'd hit the correct one, and the correct letter appears in your answer. Which keys count as neighbours depends on where on the key you tapped: the key beside it on that side, and the key diagonally above or below on that side.
This rule has limits:
- It never applies while a wrong letter is waiting to be deleted (see above).
- It never applies to SPACE or ⌫, and they're never accepted in place of a letter.
- It never supplies an accented letter. If the word needs "é", only the accent picker will do.
Because the correct letter is what appears on screen, you often won't notice that the rule was used at all.
